I. Families of Aphidoidea (Aphids and phylloxerans):
- Aphididae - Aphids
- have cornicles (sipunculi)
- have cauda
- Antennae usually 5-6-segmented
- soft-bodied, often pear-shaped
- Adelgidae (Chermidae) - pine and spruce aphids
- no cornicles
- often covered with waxy threads
- 5-segmented antennae
- on conifers, with Picea as primary host, other conifers as secondary hosts
- Phylloxeridae - Phylloxerans, e.g. grape phylloxera
- similar to adelgids, but Cu1 and Cu2 in forewing stalked at base
- wings horizontal at rest
- may have waxy powder, never waxy threads
- 3-segmented antennae
- on plants other than conifers
